Match the wedding dress without outshining it. Make the dresses a similar style, but more plain and simple.- Don’t limit yourself to bridal stores. You just might find the perfect dresses at a prom store or a department store, or even online.
- Don’t even look at dresses outside the price range. It just creates problems. If you are paying for them yourself, don’t let your bridesmaids talk you into extravagant dresses. If your bridesmaids are pitching in, keep in mind their limited budgets, too.

- Keep in mind the different body types. Some dresses work better with bustier bridesmaids, while some work better with the long and thin girls. Look for dresses that will be flattering on all of your bridesmaids.
- It’s OK to shop online. There are more options online than anywhere else. Just make sure to think ahead! Buy one dress (in a size in the middle of your bridesmaids’) and see how it fits and looks before you buy the rest.
- Shop early! Leave time for alterations. Plus, it is much easier to match everything to the dress that you already have, than to find a dress that has to match the flowers, and centerpieces, and tablecloths, etc.
- Make sure the bridesmaids are okay with your demands from beginning. You can’t please everyone. You don’t want to upset any lifelong friendships, but you also want things done right for your big day.
- Have a sensitive ear. Don’t be Bridezilla. Your wedding is important, but so are your bridesmaids.
- Be somewhat flexible, especially on accessories. Maybe you want them all to wear turquoise high heels, but let them choose the style.
- Keep in mind weather and venue. Your bridesmaids will be happier if they aren’t freezing cold (who’s for strapless, above-the-knee dresses in winter?) or burning hot (long, black evening dresses on a summer afternoon—ouch).
- It’s okay not to be traditional. You don’t have to have taffeta dresses. Maybe you love the trendy, striped maxi skirt look? Use it!
- Are the dresses functional? Bridesmaids will be happier if they can wear them again, but decide from the beginning if that is necessary
- Try out fabrics and colors before you actually go shopping. Maybe this one shows every lump or maybe that one is super itchy. Maybe the color and fabric don’t work well together at all.
- Don’t do it yourself. This one is self-explanatory.
- Don’t drown in the details. Finding bridesmaid dresses is not nearly as important as finding the wedding dress, and nothing is as important as the fact that you are getting married! Just have fun with your bridesmaids as they help you celebrate your wedding.
