Now that you have a date set for your wedding it is time to start looking for that perfect wedding dress. Here are some wedding tips to help find that beautiful wedding dress.

1. Shop Early

You should start shopping about eight to ten months before the wedding. It can take up to two months to find that perfect wedding dress and at least four months to have the gown custom-made to fit your body. The first fitting of your gown is usually six to eight weeks before the wedding. Give yourself plenty of time to shop so you will not feel rushed and make the mistake of settling for the wrong dress.

2. Set The Budget First

You need to set your budget first as it is best to look for gowns that fit that budget rather than a gown that is too expensive. It is essential to remember that your wedding budget includes the gown, alterations, shoes, veil, headpiece, lingerie, and jewelry.

3. Determine Dress Code

Take a hint from your locale and time of day for the wedding as to the formalness of the wedding. A ballroom gown will look out of place in an outdoor ceremony but fit flawlessly for a ballroom wedding. If the ceremony is being performed in a church you may want to check to see if there are any requirements as to dress code for the church.

4. Go in With a Clear Vision of Your Style

Decide whether you want your wedding to be sentimental, graceful, enchanting or classic as this will help in describing to the salesperson what you are looking for in a gown.

5. Make Requests

You should look through bridal magazines and online to see if there are any gowns that you would like to try on when you visit the salon. You might consider calling the salon to see if they have a special designers gowns available so if they don’t they may be able to acquire a sample gown.

6. Book an Appointment

It is best to call and book an appointment to guarantee you will have an hour of the salesperson exclusive attention. Most salons require appointments for shopping for wedding gowns.

7. Play Hooky

Shop during the week as you will find less crowds. You will get more attention from the sales staff if you shop on a weekday morning rather than a Saturday morning.

8. Be Open-Minded

It is best to try on several styles of dresses and then decide which shape and style of dress fits best and feels comfortable. If the salesperson brings you a dress she feels would look good on you give it a try as many a bride have found their gowns by trying gowns suggested by a salesperson.

9. Shop With Supportive Entourage

Limit your shopping partners to one or two friends in the search for your wedding gown. Your friends should have a clear perception of your goal and your bridal style and budget.

10. Buy a Dress That Fits Now

Buy a wedding gown that fits you now even if you are planning on losing weight before the wedding. It is always easier to take in a gown than add fabric to a gown. Wedding gowns tend to run small so don’t be alarmed if your dress is a size or two larger than your regular dress size. After your final fitting be sure your gown touches the toe of your shoes and you can move easily, the gown stays in place when you move, there is no wrinkling or pulling.

11. Read the Fine Print

When you order your gown from a bridal salon it is essential to triple-check your contract. Check to be sure you don’t end up with the incorrect size or color. Make certain to get the designers name, style number, measurements, delivery date, number of fittings included in the price, the price of the gown and the deposit amount in writing.

12. Bring Your Accessories

You should bring a nude bra and panties with you for the fittings. Bring a pair of shoes with the same heel height as you will wear with your gown to see how the dress flows. Also bring the veil, gloves, headpiece and any other accessories you will be wearing on your wedding day.

13. Be Certain

The first gown you try on may be the perfect one but still try on other gowns as you may find one in a different color, style or fabric you like better than the original gown. Most gowns are custom made and bridal salons usually have a no return policy in their contracts.

14. Trust Your Instincts

If you need to be assured that the dress looks good on you it’s probably the wrong dress for you. You know what style you want and what features you desire to highlight. Be vocal about your vision, your best assets and your problem spots as this will help your salesperson in finding a gown for you. You will know it when you find that perfect wedding dress as it will be an emotional time.
